Setting Up PhotoShop & Illustrator for Web Design

We all have our tools of choice when it comes to design whether it be Paint Shop Pro, PhotoShop, Illustrator or the other million programs available. Today I want to talk about Photoshop and Illustrator and some settings everyone who is designing anything for the web needs to know. Have you ever noticed that a color you’re wanting to use just looks different when you apply it? Pretty much everyone who has ever designed has had an issue with matching color. You obviously want your design to have the same colors on all browsers and computers. When a design has been done right the color should never change.
One of the best tips I was taught was to disable color management for RGB documents as much as possible. By doing this you’re forcing the RGB colors that are on screen and saved to the file to match the actual color value and that is what we all want at the end of the day. So here is how you can achieve this yourself.
PhotoShop/Illustrator (yes the steps are the exact same)
1. Go to Edit – Color Settings and set the working space for RGB to Monitor RGB.
2. Open your document and go to Edit – Assign Profile and then set it to Working RGB.
3. Ensure View – Proof Colors is turned off.
4. When saving files with Save for Web & Devices, ensure that Convert to RGB is turned off. If you’re saving a JPEG file, then also turn off Embed Color Profile.
